An Observation: A great example of Robert's artistic prowess can be found in this wonderful nostalgic painting. It displays a captivating array of bold impressionist brush strokes that unfold into an alluring tapestry of colours and textures.
Take note: This impressionist gem is an important diminutive work by this talented 20th century Canadian artist, painted somewhere in the 1930's or early 1940's at the height of his artistic career. It's set within a fine quality 1930's hand-carved and gilded frame that's a rare find on its own. The setting for this painting is one of the quaint side streets and laneways found in and around the artist colony at Gloucester, Mass. Over the past century, countless Canadian artists have visited and joined other fellow artists in painting the local picturesque village streets and the surrounding coastal backdrop of this important east coast artist's hangout.
Robert was born in Heywood, Lancashire, England in 1905 and immigrated to Canada in 1919 with his parents.
Robert worked in oils and watercolours and painted a wide variety of subjects including scenes of rural Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes. He also travelled across Canada and into the United States where he painted in Gloucester, Mass., along with many of his fellow contemporary artists, as did numerous other Canadian artists during the early part of the 20th century.
Although he was not a member of any artist's associations he did exhibit with the RCA and the OSA between the 1940's and 50's at numerous art showings. He was known to travel and paint with many other well noted artists during his painting career.
Robert Lee Chadwick passed away in 1971.
